Cone Sizes Explained: Shortys vs 1 1/4 vs King Size

Posted by HerbSaver on Oct 9th 2026

Standing in front of a wall of pre-rolled cones, the size names can sound like inside jokes: Shortys, 1 1/4, King Size. They're not complicated, though, and once you know what each one is built for you'll grab the right cone without thinking about it. This guide breaks down the three sizes we carry from Blazy Susan, who each one is best for, and how to get a clean, even fill every time.

Cone sizes at a glance

Here's the short version. All three sizes are pre-rolled, so there's no rolling skill needed: grind, fill, pack and twist.

Size How long Best for Packs we carry
Shortys 53mm, about half the length of a standard cone Quick solo sessions, trying a new strain, a few hits with a friend 12-count and 50-count
1 1/4" The everyday standard Most sessions, one or two people 6-count and 50-count
King Size The long one Slower sessions and passing around a group 3-count and 50-count

Not sure where to start? Go with 1 1/4". It's the size most people think of when they picture a cone, and it's the easiest one to fill well.

Shortys: the quick-session cone

Shortys are the smallest cone in the lineup at 53mm, about half the length of a standard cone. That makes them the go-to when you don't want to commit to a full session.

When Shortys make sense

  • Solo sessions. You get what you want without leaving half a cone to relight later.
  • Sampling a strain. If you just picked up something new, a Shorty is an easy way to try it.
  • Sharing a few hits. Enough for two people without being a whole production.
  • Going light on your stash. A smaller cone simply needs less flower to fill.

Because they're short, Shortys are also forgiving to pack. There's less length for an air pocket to hide in, which makes them a good cone for beginners.

1 1/4": the everyday standard

The 1 1/4" cone is the middle size and the one most people reach for day to day. It's big enough for a proper session without being bulky, so it works whether you're on your own or with a friend.

Why 1 1/4" is the default pick

  • It fits most situations. Not too small for a real session, not so big that it goes to waste.
  • It's easy to fill evenly. The length is manageable, so you can pack it in a few passes without a lot of fuss.
  • It's the best place to learn. If you're new to cones, nailing the 1 1/4" makes Shortys and King Size easy.

King Size: the long cone for sharing

King Size is the longest cone we carry, made for slower sessions or passing around with friends. If a 1 1/4" usually disappears before the circle is done, size up.

Tips for King Size cones

  • Fill in stages. With a longer cone it's even more important to add flower a little at a time and pack between pours, so you don't end up with a loose middle.
  • Plan your grind. A long cone takes more flower. A grinder with real capacity, like the Large HerbSaver 4-Piece (about 14g), lets you grind once instead of refilling halfway through.
  • Try a small pack first. Our 3-count King Size packs are a low-cost way to see if you like the size before stocking up on a 50-count jar.

How to choose the right cone size

Ask yourself three quick questions:

  1. How many people? Just you: Shortys or 1 1/4". Two people: 1 1/4". A group: King Size.
  2. How long do you want the session to last? Quick break: Shortys. Normal session: 1 1/4". Long, slow hang: King Size.
  3. How much flower do you want to use? Smaller cones need less. If you're trying to stretch your stash, size down.

A lot of people keep two sizes on hand: a jar of 1 1/4" for everyday use and a pack of Shortys or King Size for the times the 1 1/4" isn't quite right. Browse every size and pack in our pre-rolled cones collection.

Does cone color change anything?

No, only the look. Our cones come in pink, purple and unbleached, and all three are Blazy Susan cones made to roll and burn the same way. Unbleached paper keeps its natural brown color with no whitening or dye, for a classic look. Pink is Blazy Susan's signature color, and purple is the same easy cone in a bolder, darker shade.

Whichever color you pick, these Blazy Susan cones use paper made in France and are vegan and non-GMO.

How to fill a pre-rolled cone (any size)

The steps are the same for Shortys, 1 1/4" and King Size. The longer the cone, the more patience step 3 needs.

  1. Grind evenly. A consistent, fluffy grind is the single biggest factor in a cone that burns evenly. Big chunks leave air pockets, and powder packs too tight. A sharp grinder with diamond-cut teeth, like any HerbSaver grinder, gives you a consistent grind in a few turns.
  2. Work over a tray. Filling a cone always spills a little. A rolling tray with raised edges catches it so you can scoop it back in instead of losing it to the couch.
  3. Pour a little at a time. Add flower to the open end in small amounts, then gently tap the cone or pack it down with a packing straw or cone rolling tool. Repeat until it's full.
  4. Pack firm, not tight. You want it snug enough that it doesn't sag, but loose enough to draw easily.
  5. Twist the top closed. Leave a little paper at the top, then twist it shut. Done.

Which grinder pairs best with each cone size?

Your grinder doesn't have to match your cone, but some pairings just work:

  • Shortys + Mini 4-Piece. The Mini HerbSaver (1.5" x 2.5", from $12.99) is pocket-sized and grinds just enough for a small cone.
  • 1 1/4" + 2-Piece or Large 4-Piece. A 2-Piece grinder ($6.99, with a stash spot) is quick and simple. If you want a kief catcher, go 4-piece.
  • King Size + Large 4-Piece. The Large 4-Piece (2.4" x 3.8", from $14.99) holds about 14g, so one grind fills a long cone with room to spare.

Our plastic HerbSaver grinders are made from food-safe, BPA-free polypropylene with diamond-cut teeth, and the 4-piece models add a magnetic lid and kief catcher. The teeth are covered by our lifetime warranty.

Putting together a gift? Our Smoker Kits bundle a themed Large 4-Piece grinder, a matching glass ashtray and a tin rolling tray in one box. Add a jar of cones and it's a complete setup.

FAQ

What size are Shortys cones?

Shortys are 53mm long, about half the length of a standard cone. They're made for quick solo sessions or sampling a new strain.

Is 1 1/4 or King Size bigger?

King Size is bigger. The lineup goes Shortys (smallest), then 1 1/4" (the everyday standard), then King Size (the long one, for sharing or slower sessions).

What cone size is best for beginners?

1 1/4" is the easiest place to start. It's the standard size and manageable to pack evenly. Shortys are also beginner-friendly since there's less length to fill.

Do pink, purple and unbleached cones burn differently?

No. The only difference is the look. All three are Blazy Susan cones made to roll and burn the same way.

How do I keep my cone from burning unevenly?

Start with an even, consistent grind and fill the cone a little at a time, packing between pours. Most uneven burns come from chunky flower or air pockets in the middle of the cone.
